Bar Review: Nothing Broken About this Shaker

Authored by guest writer, Andrew Levie

Miami locals don’t have to travel far to celebrate their inner “hippie” at The Broken Shaker, located at The Freehand Hostel.

Voted #1 best bar in Miami by the The Miami New Times, The Broken Shaker is to many the go-to, contemporary, local bar with a South Beach tropical flair. It was also named one of the 50 Best Bars in the World, tagged as a semifinalist for a James Beard Award in 2013 and 2014, and nominated at Tales of the Cocktail's Spirited Awards.

Originally started as a “pop-up bar” in the backyard of The Freehand Hostel, the bar’s popularity and success drove it’s owner’s Gabe Orta and partner, Elad Zvi, to secure a permanent space at the Mid-Beach Hostel.

In it’s true bohemian style, there are no rules at The Broken Shaker. Just like at any hostel, the atmosphere is friendly, so you can easily strike up a conversation and make new friends in one visit. According to Orta, about 70% of guests are locals and the rest are (cool) visitors, which, if you ask me, is a perfect ratio for a bar in South Beach.

One of the talented bartenders in action!
Have I mentioned that their cocktails are out of this world? The secret behind such high quality drinks are the mixologists that make them, as well as their fresh and local ingredients. It is practically impossible to get bored of their drinks, as they are prepared using 40 different types of syrups, 20 bitters and even vinegars, which are all made in house, as well as fresh fruit fruit grown right there in the garden. Whether you are in the mood for something fruity, spicy, refreshing or floral, you will always find something to love at this place.

Even though their bar menu changes every 10 days based on the seasonality of the ingredients, my favorite thing to do is go up to the bartender, mention one or two ingredients that I like, and just have them surprise me. Trust me, you cannot go wrong with this approach, these guys will just read your mind and keep it different every time!

The beautiful thing about a night at The Broken Shaker is that, just like when you are backpacking, you never know what is going to happen next. Their drinks and food are always changing and surprising, and their friendly people keep it chill and fun. So there you go, now you know about my best kept secret — The Broken Shaker. If you try it, rest assured that your weekend nights will never be the same again. You are welcome.

A delicious cocktail made just for me with gin, basil, bitters and freshly squeezed watermelon juice.
